ubisurfer_lp.jpgThe Ubisurfer A Special Deal for UK Dealers. Both Paul and Myself have been able to get a model to review. The UbiSurfer, is a netbook and offers users free Internet access in the UK and low cost roaming in Europe and USA and include the Windows CE 6.0 operating system and Softmaker Office Suite

With the Microsoft Windows CE, the new UbiSurfer boots-up in ten seconds which is very quick indeed and that’s faster than my PC speed.  I tested the programs in the system and found that the applications launch instantly, which will be great for consumers who look for an excellent system with the familiarity of a PC. Windows CE is a pre-emptive real-time operating system that delivers a compelling user experience at all times, and is great to see on the unit.

The unit has a soft rubberised matt surface which is pleasant to touch, open up the ubisurfer and it has the usual PC layout querty keyboard.  The buttons have a positive click operation and a pleasant click with a 9.jpgseven inch TFT wide screen display that has an 800 by 480 pixel resolution, a full QWERTY keyboard and touchpad mouse pointer mean the UbiSurfer will fulfil most computing needs of the consumer. There is 2 UBS ports on the right and you can use a mouse if you don’t prefer the normal touch pad with two buttons.  We also found that you can plug a memory stick into the USB port and select your files to work on when away from the house.

The  UbiSurfer comes pre-loaded with the SoftMaker Office Suite, which offers the full feature set of a modern desktop-league office suite. SoftMaker Office lets customers open, edit, and save any Microsoft Word, Excel, or PowerPoint file, directly and without conversion, retaining all the formatting, functions, and contents of the original Office files, which means your word documents and excel files will look just the same as they always did, now that alone makes a saving as you don’t have to install office on the machine.

5.jpgBy incorporating Wi-Fi, LAN and embedded wireless data modem with SIM, the UbiSurfer allows access to the internet anywhere a mobile phone signal is available, at home and abroad, in the park on on a train. Consumers are not limited to Wi-Fi hotspots oh no, they can use it practically anywhere, and there is no need to buy a costly USB broadband dongle to ensure connection from the networks as connection is built in.

Email was dead easy to set up, and with a monthly usage of 30 hours free internet usage is ample for emails and couments, not forgetting that is for each month for a year. The pleasant screen is 7” however this was an ideal size and very good when editing documents or emails, with a couple of clicks you can access all your files, and we found all programs simple to use, word documents and excell were just like working on your PC or laptop no difference. So whats the benefits?Well first its size its fantastic, it will fit in your briefcase, student bag, even carrying it with your paper is easy.  Its main features include·

ubisurfer_screenimage_right.jpg7” TFT – Wide screen display (800 x 480 pixels) pleasant to view and clear screen·

The unit is very light at 700g with a unit size of 222 x 165 x 29.5 mm·

One thing to be kept in mind is that this UbiSurfer unit is a free-usage model, which eliminates the complexity of purchasing mobile web devices such as dongles from a network, which lets face it are expensive to use, and by eliminating in most cases 24 month contractual payments, activation fees and credit checks, which could mean the customer is not accepted onto the network.  However with this UbiSurfer the customer pays for the device not the usage. For the average customer, there are no monthly fees, airtime tariffs, contracts or recurring fees – those are paid for by Datawind. Customers get 30 hours of free surfing a month for 12 months and 5p per minute roaming in

Europe and the US. Upgrading to an unlimited usage package is available, and only an additional £5.99 a month, now that’s what I call a real deal. The bettery will run the unit for 4 hours before recharging, or if available use the electic plug in to run the unit for example on a train.

The UbiSurfer was specifically designed to provide enhanced functionality and convenience. The netbook offers 1GB SSD (solid state disk) shock proof storage plus 50GB of online storage. This can be expanded with a USB or SD Flash Memory device. Other features include an SD card reader meaning users can easily upload images, a built in dual speaker system and a stereo sound earphone jack. The battery offers up to four hours run timeubisurfer_screenimage_left.jpg
